Be still and know that I am God… Psalm 46:10

I am thinking this cold weather may be a good time to practice being still with God. Many of us are spending a little more time indoors working to stay warm, in comfy warm clothes, in front of a fire, under a blanket or all of the above – with our phones, a book, or the tv going. What if we let go for awhile and be still.

Lately I find myself grabbing my phone to check messages, play a game, scroll through Facebook, etc. if I am sitting, if I am waiting, even for a few minutes. What if I took that time and made a conscious effort to focus on God, to listen. I won-der what I might hear, how I might be encouraged, what I might see, what I might be missing…

It takes a concentrated effort for me to be still, to quiet my mind, to just listen. With God’s help I believe it could be a special time.

Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; Psalm 37:7a

Taking it a step further, the less we speak the less likely to say something unwholesome, make ungodly talk for which we will be held accountable or get caught up in a Facebook disagreement.

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Proverb 17:28

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Ephesians 4:29

Father, may I take time to listen to you. May I be aware of my words. May they be pleasing to you, building others up.
